The Knockers Versus the Doers
One thing that you must learn to overcome along the journey
to being a successful swimmer (and person) is the inevitable people who will
criticize everything you do.
One sure sign of
success is when you begin receiving unwanted attention from those who do nothing
but try and destroy your dreams. These people often parade around as 'experts',
but most often, it is important to remember that these people are not usually
qualified to judge anyone but themselves.
Success always demands some kind of price or sacrifice, and unfortunately
putting up with the 'knockers' while you're working your butt off at becoming a
'doer' is one of them. The strongest of souls simply will not allow anyone to
de-rail their dreams, and always remember that these critical people are often
those who 'missed out' on their own dreams, or are too scared to have a go
themselves in case they fail. Misery, they say, loves company - and that's
why the 'knockers' try and bring the 'doers' down - but refuse to allow this
to deter you from your goal.
Often those who criticize are doing so because there is some kind of reward
in it for them - possibly they (or their child, in many cases) can get further
ahead if you fall down along the way, or possibly they are simply trying to get
a sense of 'importance' about themselves. Whatever their reasons, they must not
be allowed to get in the way of your dreams and aspirations, but remember this
important fact of life:
They will always be there.
It is not possible to succeed unless you are willing to overcome criticism
from others along the way - it is simply the price you must pay for true
success. It's best to generally keep away from this type of person, because
there is rarely any benefit from being in their company. Instead, spend your
time more productively with your closest allies who really wish to see you
succeed.
Successful people hang around with other successful people, and this doesn't
even necessarily mean a successful swimmer. Your closest ally may be just an
average swimmer, but someone who is a loyal friend and who truly wishes to see
you succeed. These people are the allies you need along your journey to
success, and who make the path a little smoother from the bumps provided by
'knockers'.
So expect the criticism, because it's part of the price you must pay for
success - but always remember, that it's worth it in the long run.
Keep your eyes on your goal, and OFF the obstacles - this is one of the great
mental training principles which governs all sports.

Mind controls the body, and the mind is unlimited".
