Speedo International Age Group Invitational Meet

The weather played havoc on the Speedo International Age Group Invitational Meet in Ft Lauderdale over the weekend.

Shortly before Olympian Neil Versfeld was to tackle the men’s 100m breaststroke, the events had to be postponed from Saturday to Sunday due to a huge storm. Unfortunately for Versfeld, his flight back to Georgia on Sunday meant he would not be able to compete. This just proves how fortunate we are to have a facility like Kings Park.

But for the remaining Seals swimmers, there were some excellent results. John Ellis was in excellent form in the 200m IM where he took 3rd in a fast 2:12,01. But Sunday saw him in a class of his own as he raced to a solid 3:59,76 in the 400m freestyle before swimming away from the opposition again in the 200m backstroke to clock 2:08,13.

Mickey Olivier stunned the locals again with a cracking 29,40sec dash in the boys 13-14 years 50m backstroke on Saturday. The 100m butterfly was moved to Sunday which forced him to juggle a few events. But in the 100m freestyle, he drew the cheers from the crowd who saw him equal the meet record in an outstanding 54,78sec. He followed this up with a silver in the 100m butterfly in 1:03,61.

Tyne Potgieter did well to take two golds in the  girls 15-16 years 50m breaststroke (35,06sec) and the 100m breaststroke in 1:17,88.
