Second and Third for Townsend and Schoeman on the final day of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup in Stockholm

The FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup Series officially concluded tonight in Stockholm with a fantastic performance by the South African swimming team.

Darian Townsend was on top of the world as he claimed the second position on the ranking table based on the points accumulated over the last six legs as well as the $50 000 prize money.

Townsend confirmed that prize when he won the gold medal in the 200m individual medley and the bronze medal in the 200m freestyle tonight.

Touching the wall over a second ahead of the pack in the 200m individual medley, Townsend made it to the top of the medal podium in a time of 1:54.47. Brazil’s Henrique Rodrigues followed in second with 1:55.84 and Sweden’s Simon Sjodin in 1:56.13.

Later on in the evening, Townsend bagged his second medal, this time a bronze, in the 200m freestyle in a time of 1:44.07.

Coming in third on the 2010 rankings to claim the $30 000 prize money was Roland Schoeman.

Schoeman celebrated that achievement by winning the gold medal in the 50m freestyle with a time of 21.30, a mere 0.02 seconds ahead of Sweden’s Stefan Nystrand (21.32).

Lyndon Ferns’ time of 51.45 guaranteed him the silver medal in the 100m butterfly. It was a close race and the winning time of 51.26 belonged to Sweden’s Lars Frolander with the bronze medal going to Joeri Verlinden in 52.02.

In the 100m breaststroke, Neil Versfeld took the bronze medal in 59.23 behind Stanislav Lakhtyukov from Russia in 58.79 and France’s Hugues Duboscq in 59.20.

Another bronze medal for South Africa came the way of George du Rand in the 200m backstroke when he ended in a time of 1:53.83. Russia’s Arkady Vyatchanin (1:51.78) and Poland’s Radoslav Kawecki (1:53.19) claimed the gold and silver respectively.
